Our folk dances originated from different countries that have made constant interaction with our fellowmen. Over the years, those who learned the 'foreign dance' have inserted some variations, changed the count and beats to make them different from the original. These folkdances were adopted by the townspeople and became their town's indigenous dance.

The movements and costumes worn by the dancers reflect the mood of the dance. The costumes also mirror the region where the dance originated. For some tribes, a dance could be a form of ritual. They believe that a certain dance could make the rain fall, improve harvests and awaken the spirit of the dead. Dances are rooted in the lives of those who perform them. Religion also plays a big role in this art, because it dictates the belief being portrayed by the dance.

Most of our folkdances are performed with the accompaniment of songs that are sung by a group of musicians or sometimes the dancers themselves.

Folk dance is not only a way of showing the dance itself, but a way of showcasing the way the dancers dress as well. It is one way of flaunting elegance and beauty that is truly Filipino!
