Filipinos have an ear for music. Their contribution in our society became an identifying trait of the Filipinos. Atang de la Rama was able to borrow the ears of the foreigners all over the world during the early and middle part of the Twentieth Century with her wonderful kundiman songs.
For these gifted people, a song is a tool for expressing a feeling. The song entitled "Magkaisa" was a collaboration of various composers who urged the Filipinos to unite and topple the Marcos regime in the mid-1980s. The song "American Junk," on the other hand, was meant to express APO Hiking Society's disgust over the dominance of foreign songs in the hit charts.
Singing contests are held all over the archipelago. By the time a singer joins a singing contest on TV, his voice can already be considered well polished because of the number of contests that he had joined prior to it.
In the late 70's and early 80's, longhaired guitar god Freddie Aguilar became everybody's father with his heart wrenching song "Anak." The list of great Pinoy Musicians are endless, there's Music Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, Kilabot ng Kolehiyala Hajji Alejandro, Singer-composer Rey Valera and Asia's songbird Regine Velasquez.
Filipino musicians have indeed made a name in the international and local scene!
