The National Artist award was established under Presidential Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27,1972.

“National Artist” is used exclusively to refer to the Filipinos who have been accorded by the Philippine government the National Artist Award.

This award is given to Filipino artists who have great and significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts and cultural heritage of our country.
