Independent filmmaker Jose “Pepe” Diokno bagged two awards in the oldest film festival in the world. Diokno's entry “Engkwentro” was selected as the grand prize winner by the Orizzonti jury of the recently concluded 66th Venice Film Festival. The jury was composed of Pere Portabella of Spain (President), Gina Kim of Korea, Bady Minck of Luxembourg, Garin Nugroho Riyanto of Indonesia and Gianfranco Rosi of Italy. In addition, Diokno also won the Luigi De Laurentiis Venice Award for a debut film and received 100,000 USD for doing so.
Enkwentro centers on the story of two brothers who are on opposite sides of a gang war. The elder brother Richard, played by Felix Roco, is the leader of the “Bagong Buwan” and is hiding from a state-supported vigilante group which is known to eliminate the city of its miscreants. The younger sibling Raymond, portrayed by Daniel Medrana, is being initiated into the rival gang “Batang Dilim.” As the two groups meet in their eventual clash, Raymond is granted the unenviable task of killing his only brother.

The film premiered at the Cinemalaya Indie Festival where it was chosen to be the Philippine entry in the Venice Film Festival. The film was mostly shot using handheld digital cameras.
