SMALL-CELL LUNG CANCER

 

The most aggressive clinical course of any type of pulmonary tumor, with median survival from diagnosis of only 2 to 4 months.  It Is generally faster growing than non-small cell, but more likely to respond to chemotherapy.

Causes:

  • Cigarette 

  • Radiation exposure

  • Genetic susceptibility

  • Viral infection

Symptoms:

  • Cough
  • Chest pain 
  • Wheezing sound when breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood
  • Hoarseness
  • Swelling in the face and neck

Treatments:

  • Surgery (taking out the cancer) 
  • Radiation therapy (using high-dose x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells)
  • Chemotherapy (using drugs to kill cancer cells)
