BEE
STINGS
There
are bee stings that require emergency treatment
especially when the person goes into shock or
exhibits swelling and difficulty in breathing.
more
BLACK
EYE
The
so-called black eye is caused by bleeding beneath
the skin around the eye. Sometimes a black eye
indicates a more extensive injury, even a skull
fracture, particularly if the area around both
eyes is bruised or if there has been head trauma.
more
BLISTERS
A
raised tender lump filled with fluid usually
appears on the skin due to friction, allergy,
burns, viral infection, etc. it usually heals 3 to
7 days. more BRUISE
Bruise
or contusion occurs when there is trauma to the
soft tissue which includes blood vessels. During a
blow or a fall, the capillaries leak blood just
underneath the skin which causes the
discoloration. Bruises of no apparent reason may
be signs of bleeding disorder or systemic disease.
more BURNS
Burn
is the most severe, damaging the entire thickness
of the skin. more CARDIOPULMONARY
RESUSCITATION (CPR)
This
is a procedure used when the victim is not
breathing no pulse is perceived. more CHOKING
Choking
occurs when the victim is unable to breathe due to
a piece of food or foreign object blocks the
windpipe. There are instances when the victim can
breathe in enough air to cough out and dislodge
the object. But in cases of full blockage, quick
medical attention is needed. more CONVULSION
Convulsion
or seizure is caused by episode of uncontrolled
bioelectrical discharge in the brain. Epileptic
patients who suffer from frequent seizures require
immediate medical attention. Children with high
fever must be treated immediately to prevent
convulsions and brain damage. more CORNEAL
ABRASION (scratch)
The most common types of eye injury involve the
cornea — the clear, protective
"window" at the front of the eye.
Contact with dust, dirt, sand, wood shavings,
metal particles or even an edge of a piece of
paper can scratch or cut the cornea.
more CUTS
AND ABRASIONS
Minor
cuts and grazes are day-to-day occurrences and
need first aid or home treatment. more CUTS
AND SCRAPES
Cuts
and scrapes are injuries that break the outer
protective layer of skin. A cut occurs when the
skin is pierced or sliced; a scrape, when the skin
is visibly abraded or roughed up.
more DISLOCATION
A
dislocation is an injury in which the ends of your
bones are forced from their normal positions. The
cause is usually trauma, such as a blow or fall,
but can be an underlying disease such as
rheumatoid arthritis. more DOG
BITES
Rabies
is a deadly viral disease that can be transmitted
to a person by an infected animal. more DROWNING
Lay
the victim out of the water. Sputtering or
coughing indicates that the victim is breathing.
Put him in recovery position to drain the water
from his lungs and airway. more ELECTRIC
SHOCK
Electric
shock occurs when a person touches frayed wires or
faulty electrical appliances with wet hands or
while standing on a wet ground. more EYE
INJURY
Foreign
objects can cause redness and irritation. Some
injuries like tearing of the cornea, chemical burn
and eyeball injury needs immediate medical
attention. more FAINTING
Temporary
loss of consciousness is due to lack of blood
supply in the brain. This is brought about by
severe pain, hunger, shock, stress, breathing
stuffy air, exhaustion, etc. more FIRST
AID BASICS
Check
the following when you approach an injured person:
a.
Airway - check if the victim's airway is not
blocked by the tongue, secretions or foreign body;
b. Breathing - check if the victim is
breathing. If not, administer artificial
respiration. more FISH
HOOK IN THE SKIN
Unlike
any other splinters, fish hooks are not easy to
remove due to the barbs present. Remove it only if
there is no medical aid available, if the hook is
not deeply embedded or if the barb is visible. It
is best to let a doctor remove fish hooks. more FOOD
POISONING
It
is a result from eating contaminated food by
bacteria, viruses, tiny animals, parasites, toxic
chemicals, etc. Person suffers from diarrhea,
abdominal cramps, blurred or double vision. more FOREIGN
BODIES IN THE EAR
Same
with the nose, children may put objects inside
their ears. Sometimes insects may crawl or fly and
get stuck inside. Most common is the cotton. It
gets stuck while we clean our ears. more FOREIGN
BODIES IN THE NOSE
Children
have tendencies to place objects in their noses.
If a child presents the following signs, he may
have an object inside his nose. more FRACTURE
AND DISLOCATION PART I
Broken
bones or fractures are results of hard falls or
strong blows. While dislocation, the bones in a
joint are jerked out of place. Both show intense
pain, limited movement of the affected area,
swelling and deformity. When not sure, always
treat the injury as fracture. more FRACTURE
AND DISLOCATION PART II
Before
medical help arrives and you have to move the
victim, you have to immobilize the broken part.
more HEAD
INJURY
It
can occur at home, sports, traffic, work or even
gunshot. Even without any external injuries, a
hard blow on the head is still considered as a
head injury since there is always the possibility
of internal damage. more HEAT
STROKE
If
the body’s cooling mechanism fails in humid
atmosphere or due to overexposure to heat, heat
stroke sets in. more HEIMLICH
MANEUVER
This
procedure is done to dislodge foreign object on a
choking victim. more HUMAN
BITES
Human
bites can be as dangerous or more dangerous than
animal bites because of the types of bacteria and
viruses contained in the human mouth
more INSECT
BITES
Insect
bites appear as tiny pricks on the skin. They are
usually painful or itchy. Most insect bites are
irritative but some needs medical attention like
bites of Aedes mosquito infected with dengue
fever. more MOUTH-TO-MOUTH
RESUSCITATION
For
patients who has stopped respiration however still
has a pulse, this is an effectual way of infusing
air to the lungs. more NOSEBLEED
Most
types of nosebleed can be treated at home, but
some may be symptoms of an underlying disease.
This condition is very common in children and
those who take large amounts of alcohol and
anti-coagulants. more SEVERE
BLEEDING
Applying
pressure can easily stop the bleeding from shallow
wounds.
Severe bleeding is fatal from large or deep
wounds and can be very fatal. more SNAKE
BITE
Always
consider all snake bites poisonous and go to the
nearest emergency room immediately. more SPLINTERS
