by: Lea Mantro Beltran

The Philippines is faced with the double burden of malnutrition: under nutrition and overnutrition. According to the FNRI National Nutrition Survey 18.3 percent of females and 3.1 males are considered obese or with BMI over 30 kg/m+ in 2003.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that obesity has reached epidemic proportion, with more than one billion adults overweight, with at least 300 million of them clinically obese.

Because of these realities, healthy lifestyle became a trend and proliferation of products claiming to be "healthy" emerged like mushroom confusing a lot of consumers.

Realizing that there is a growing need to educate Filipinos about the truth behind proper nutrition and on the occasion of the nutrition month, Nutrilite, the global inventor of dietary supplement, initiates a basic nutrition camp held at The Farm, an overall wellness hub in San Benito, Batangas.

Combining the basic principles of proper nutrition, the latest in dietary supplementation, and groundbreaking technology in wellness assessment, the nutrition camp redefined healthy living in the Philippines from fad to full under standing. Experts from FNRI-the country's nutrition think tank, led the discussion participated by invited media practitioners. Thus, the basic nutrition camp equipped a person with the proper knowledge before starting a healthy lifestyle.

FNRI Science and Research Specialist II Milagros F. Villadolid, who talked about relationship between nutrition and health, also stressed on the danger of being overweight and obese that can lead to hypertension, stroke, heart diseases, hyperlipidemia, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis, mood, sleep, and eating disorders, gout, gall bladder disease and some cancers.

On the other hand, Dr. Zenaida Narciso, Officer-in-Charge, Office of the Deputy Director, FNRI, who also talked about myths and facts about vitamins and minerals, is very positive in the growing awareness about proper nutrition.

"It's time for a new nutrition conversation with consumers. When we change the way we talk about nutrition from technical jargons to messages that reflect consumers. needs and lifestyle, they hear better what we want them to know. More importantly, they are able to take small, positive steps towards improving their health," Narciso says.

Ma. Elena G. Fernandez, Senior Science Research Specialist, discussed about phytochemicals in food and its importance and sources. In the end, Fernandez recommends everybody to eat more vegetables, fruits and rootcrops. According to her, phytochemicals, which are plant chemicals that give fruits and vegetables their bright colors, flavors and aromas, are natural bioactive compounds that have antioxidant properties which help fight chemicals that believed to trigger changes in cells and cause diseases.

Lastly, Joy Andres-Villareal, Nutrilite product manager, reminded participants that, "Currently, there is a one size fits all nutrition phenomenon in the market; different people take the same dietary supplement without really understanding what they need. At the same time, no two people require the same health enrichment program. Thus, it takes a genuine know how grounded on science, research and commitment to deliver optimal health as promised."

Rounding up this nutrition getaway is Live Blood Analysis (LBA), a groundbreaking medical procedure that analyzes blood in cellular level. By taking a drop of blood and observing it via a microscope on a video screen, a doctor can see a person's state of immune system, possible vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, blood toxicity, and how healthy his or her vital organs are.

Indeed, the camp equipped the participants to lead a healthy lifestyle and propagate the good news.
