Various food supplements have indeed grown in popularity nowadays despite the "no approved therapeutic claim" tag. Different types are consistently being introduced to the market responding to almost all parts of the body. Claiming to be essential, these supplements have confused consumers with the mechanics of its usage.

The lopsidedness of a4vertising and marketing, creates a "wonder" image for these supplements, which mislead the public into thinking that these are cure for diseases, or the most effective way to prevention. The Bureau of Food and Drugs released a statement stressing that these supplements cannot cure any disease, and they are just mere supplements.
What are food supplements?
According to the vice president of the Nutritionists-Dieticians Association of the Philippines, Felicidad Velandria, food supplements are preparations intended to supply nutrients that are missing or not sufficiently taken from the usual diet of an individual. She added that there is no research yet to prove the effectiveness of such as medicines but are proven efficient as vitamins.
These come in two forms: first is in tablet capsule or liquid form, which is intended for medical use. Second is the natural or raw form, which is already found in food. However, the medicinal form is given to patients who cannot eat solid food because of several treatments, like surgery. "[Drug form] are prescribed to those who has undergone serious treatment and can not eat on their own," says Velandria "And since the body needs to maintain its level of energy and nutrients for recovery, they are given these supplements."
Possible side effects
Though these vitamins and minerals are essential for our health, any excess would lead to a bigger problem instead of avoiding it. Food supplements have its own pros and cons and if unnecessarily taken, it can bring abnormality in our system. "If taken in excess, there are negative effects which however depend on the nutrient he ingested," says Velandria "if the nutrient is fat-soluble, then it can result in to toxicity. If it's water-soluble, it can cause organ damage."

She stresses that food supplements are unnecessary if an individual lives a healthy lifestyle and maintains a proper diet. She asserts that nature can provide us our nutritional needs and supplements serve only as an assistant. "People need to eat nutritious food like fruits and vegetables," says Velandria.
Moreover, she and her association promote proper education of the public not only about food supplements but also eating a healthier diet. They are conducting seminars and public forums nationwide regarding the latest health issues.
The nutritionist advices people to coordinate with medical experts before taking in any substance that has a direct effect with one.s health. Since these are classified as over-the-counter drugs, it is difficult to tell which brand is not effective and which is scientifically endorsed. Also, fake supplements have been reported released in the markets and caution is strictly advised by the government itself.
People should always reconsider; better yet consult an expert than jeopardizing their health. "Food supplements are not all bad. Its intake depends on the condition of the individual but it is best to consult with your physician or nutritionist to secure safety," says Velandria.
