The
Spanish Missionaries discovered
this place in 1572. It was
founded in 1581 and was named
"Batangan" due to the
numerous huge logs that abounded
the Calumpang River. The natives
that reside near the river called
these logs batang and
called their settlement or
barangay “Batangan”. In 1601
the name was modified and was later
on called Batangas.
One
of the many known festivities in
the region is the very
popular “Parada ng Lechon”.
This merriment corresponds with
the feast of St. John the
Baptist. The lechons emerging
from every baranggay are paraded
at the town plaza. After the
said parade, the townspeople
and their guests join in the
feast.
One
of the oldest churches ever built
in the Philippines is located in
Batangas City. This is the
Immaculate Conception Parish
where you could find the Sto. Niño
statue which was said to have
been lost at the sea and was
later found. The church was built
in 1547.
