CAGAYAN

Cagayan is famous for the many natural wonders it has in its area, especially its natural caves.  Dubbed as a “Spelunker’s Paradise”, it boasts of a number of caves scattered within the province.  Located at the northeastern corner of Luzon, Cagayan borders the Cordillera Mountains of Apayao and Ilocos Norte to the west, Isabela and Kalinga to the south.  To the north are the Babuyan Islands which are actually a part of the province, and the Pacific Ocean to its east.

The Penablanca Protected Landscape, which houses more than 300 caves, 75 of which have been documented by the National Museum and 30 have been mapped by the British Exploration Club and the Sierra Madre Outdoor Club.  It is the most notable cave system in the Philippines.  It also has the Iguig Calvary Hills, which shows off the 14 Stations of the Cross, a colossal version of the representation of the Catholic custom which commemorates the passion of Jesus Christ.  This is a popular site especially during the Holy Week.  Aside from spelunking, other activities make the province a favorite destination for the outdoorsman.  With the peaks and valleys dotting the province, mountain climbing, trekking and camping have been cherished pursuits that endear Cagayan to many tourists.

The Province is also rich in water attractions.  With its beautiful coastline and the Cagayan River, water action is always in full swing and the tourist will never be left wanting.  Scuba diving and game fishing is realizable at Palaui Island.  For the surfing enthusiast, the waters in Claveria and Sanchez Mira fulfill your dream wave-hunting.  There is always something to do in Cagayan, be it spelunking, water-sports or just nature watching, the province offers it all.

As for the Cagayan River, the longest and widest river in the country, it not only offers the tourists recreation, but is also the reason for the fertile land of the region.  Rice, corn and sugarcane are the major produce of Cagayan.  Though coffee, coconut and fruits are also some of the crops Cagayan produces.  The local government encourages the planting of high value crops that have a high degree of integration which is essential for the province’s economic growth.  Organically grown crops are also produced in the province, thanks mainly to a Taiwanese company that is spearheading the project in conjuncture with the local government.  Fishing and livestock is also a vast resource in the province.

To visit Cagayan, one has to either take a regular Philippine Airline flight from Manila to Tuguegarao, which will take about an hours travel, or a ten hours ride by land from Manila through Maharlika Highway.
