The
island's name came from an old
myth of the province. They say
that Princess Guima and her
lover, Aras, elope to escape the
betrothal of her father. Whenever
the strong winds embroil the
peaceful water along the shore,
the villagers would hear the
voice of the princess' father
calling out their names.
Guimaras
has a wealth of both natural and
man-made attractions. There are
also good spots for spear
fishing, scuba diving and
snorkeling. The interior of the
island is ideal for hikers and
mountain bike enthusiasts.
Beaches
of Puerto
Del Mar, Raymen
Beach Cottages, Tatlong
Pulo, Baras
Beach Resort and Natagong
Beach Resort are
blessed with white sand beaches
and colored corals. Most resorts
have cottages/inns where tourists
could check-in for a great night
stay like in Nagarao
Island Resort and Costa
Aguada Island Resort.
The
province is also famous for its'
religious rituals and
attractions. Navalas Church and
Buenavista Wharf are some of the
living legacies of the past. The
presentation of Ang Pagtaltal
sa Guimaras where a
procession is held by the
followers and a dramatization of
Christ's journey to Calvary is
known in the town of Jordan. In
Nueva Valencia, the people
perform the rituals of Pang-alap.
Here, hundreds of devotees crawl
the long passage of Catiliran
Cave while uttering prayers in
Latin.
The
province is accessible by pump
boats from Iloilo City.
