ILIGAN CITY
Land of Majestic Waterfalls

Known as the “Land of Majestic Waterfalls,” Iligan City is located in the northeastern part of Mindanao, with Balo-I and Linamon, Lanao del Norte in the south, Lugait, Misamis Oriental in the north, Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon in the east, and Iligan Bay in the west.  It is home to several acclaimed artists, poets, cultural workers and writers, and is also inhabited by Maranaos of Lanao del Sur, Higaonons of Bukidnon and Christian migrants.  Once a coastal trading settlement, the city was seized by the troop of Pedro Manook, one of Legazpi's men.  It finally became an independent city on June 16, 1960.

Iligan is renowned for its 20 majestic waterfalls, the grandest of which is the Maria Cristina Falls.  320 feet high, it is one of the main sources of power in the city, and is recognized as the “Mother of Industry” and the “Fountainhead of Progress.”  The other waterfalls include the Timoga Cold Springs with its fresh, clear waters, the Mimbalut Falls, which is only 90 feet high and 18 feet wide, and the Tinago Falls, which is hidden in a deep, narrow valley.

Aside from the famous falls, other things await travellers in Iligan.  A white sand beach with cottages for rent is situated in Initao, 30 kilometers north of the city.  The Anahaw Ampitheater, just below the city hall on Buhanginan Hill, features cultural presentations, sports tournaments and other social activities.  Downtown, you can find supermarkets, novelty shops, department stores, and shops that sell Maranao handicrafts.

Another attraction to watch out for is the “Kasadya,” a festival held every September 27 in honor of Michael the Archangel.  It is a celebration of Iliganon tradition, with street dancing, competitions of tribal dances, and religious stage plays.
