ORIENTAL MINDORO
The Islands' Loveliest Harbor

Located on the eastern part of Mindoro Island, Oriental Mindoro is surrounded by Verde Island Passage to the north, Tablas Strait to the east, and the islands of Semirara and Panay to the south.  It is separated from Occidental Mindoro by a range of mountains.  The province got its name from "Mina de Oro," since the Spaniards believed that the land was the grounds of a fabled mountain gold.

One of Southern Tagalog's primary rice producers, Oriental Mindoro also grows coconut, corn, citrus and banana.  Fishing is another major industry, as the province has 13 coastal towns that are good fishing grounds.  Among the fishes found in these waters are tuna, mackarel, snapper, anchovy and round scad.  In addition, Oriental Mindoro has rich forests that produce rattan, vines and buri, and several caves and mountains where minerals like gold and coal are mined.

Some of the province's natural treasures are its rich marine life and colorful coral reefs.  It has also beautful lakes, rivers and rain forests, where visitors can enjoy hiking, camping and game fishing.  There are also a number of historical sites, like the old Spanish fortress Kuta and the Cross at Muelle.  In addition, one can view Mt. Halcon in Baco, the country's fourth highest peak and home to the rare tamaraw.  However, Oriental Mindoro is best known for its beaches, the most famous of which is Puerto Galera, where one can enjoy the tropical Philippine climate.

Another reason to visit the province is the Sanduguan Festival, which is held every 15th of November and re-enacts the first contact between the natives of Mindoro and traders from China.

Oriental Mindoro is easily accessible from Manila via a two-and-a-half hour trip to Batangas and a two-hour ferry ride to Calapan or Puerto Galera.

Tourists and other guests of the island can choose from many hotels and resorts to lodge in.  Some of these are Coco Beach, La Laguna Beach Club, Marco Vicent Residence Inn, Portofino Beach Resort, and Kalaw Place.
