Callao Caves

A commanding and resplendent cave with seven chambers, the Callao Caves is one of the most popular sites in Cagayan Province.  Located within the Peņablanca Protected Landscape, the caves are a part of the huge body of caverns in the region.  What makes it special though, is the mystique that surrounds the area.  It is believed that the caves were used by the occupying Japanese as a base camp for the region, thus conjuring rumors of buried treasures, booby traps and ghosts.

Jagged edges adorn the entrance of the cave.  Stalagmites decorate the floors serving as warnings for those who choose to enter, a caveat, not unlike those warning signs that are at the mouth of pirate caves of lore.  Stalactites protrude from the roof of the caves, like jagged knives aimed at unsuspecting visitors.  At the center of the cave is a magnificent cathedral of minerals morphed to enigmatic shapes, invoking an almost holy air into the Spartan landscape.  Naturally, a chapel was built in the heart of this chamber.  Natural crevices within the seven chambers of the caves serve as illumination for the dark and hallowed halls of this edifice.

The play of light and shadows add a magnificent effect on the pious grounds.  The silence is overwhelming and seeing the envelopment of light by the cape of shadows makes it even more eerie.  But the core of the experience is in the peace and tranquility offered by these caves, which serve as a retreat from the hustle of life and as a succor in the face of wailing strife.
