Donsol, Sorsogon

The Philippines is home to a wide variety of beautiful creatures, both on land and in sea. One of the most fascinating species of marine life in the country, however, is the whale shark, known locally as butanding, which can be found in the waters of Donsol, Sorsogon.

The butanding are awesome in size, reaching lengths greater than 15 meters; however, they are gentle creatures, and it is a most remarkable experience to swim among them. They are quite a sight to behold, even if only from a boat, but if you wish to swim next to them, it is best done with snorkling gear, which can be rented at the Donsol Tourism Office. It is also there that you can register and be oriented before you see the butanding.

While butanding may be spotted year-round, the best season to look for them last from November through May, peaking from February through April. The best time of day to spot them are before noon, since the waters are clearer and there are more butanding out at that time.

To maximize your experience with the butanding, plan well beforehand, so that you get there prepared and be there at the best possible time!
