A sandbar is created by a shallowing of water around a landform due to the size of the waves and the strength of the currents. The sandbar in Higatangan Island is located on the southeastern tip of the island and would arch to the north or south depending on the sea current during certain periods of the year. The sandbar extends up to 200 meters to the sea with large, coral rocks dotting the bar along with giant clamshells some measuring up to a meter in width.
A number of resorts have sprung up to cater to the growing number of tourists arriving in the area. The island itself is underdeveloped, which is as much the attraction as it is a concern. The pristine waters and long stretches of untouched beaches and coastline have enamored tourists to the island. The island also has an historical asterisk. This is where Marcos took refuge during the height of World War II.
With its white sand beaches, pristine waters, exotic rock formation and its famous sandbar, Higatangan Island is the ideal vacation spot for nature's purists.
