Holon, meaning “deep water” in the local dialect, was formerly named Lake Maughan, named after a certain Col. Maughan, a U.S. Army pilot whose plane disappeared in the lake after a survey operation. A certain Col. Parker accompanied him during this expedition, for whom the mountain was also named after. This crater lake fringes an area of 259 hectares of pristine waters. Its tranquil waters is perfect for swimming, boating and rowing.
Exotic flora and fauna can also be found in the lake and its outlying areas. The mountain itself, a dormant volcano, houses some exceptional species of animal life including a rare butterfly, the Parantica Dannatti Reyesi, discovered by Prof. Josue delos Reyes of the Koronadal-based Notre Dame Marbel University. Berries and shrubs also abound in the slopes, and you can only marvel at the mountain's rich biodiversity.
Such is the beauty of the mountain and its lake. And like its abode, South Cotabato, it is also rich in history and resources. A lake within a volcano teeming with life and vigor - now who wouldn't want to see that?
