MALAMAWI ISLAND

The Gateway to Basilan. This is how the locals and visitors of the island have described Malamawi Island. And true enough, ships that cross the Basilan Strait that opens to Isabela are greeted with the sight of Malamawi.s lighthouse, guiding them through the kilometer wide channel.

The island is home to the nomad seafaring Badjaos' and Samal-Luaans-Banguingui's dearly departed, and is also where the Muslim cemetery is located. It boasts of the only lake in the province that has wild ducks as well as the whereabouts of the Panigayan Village, where spearfishing is a way of life.

But the attraction for most tourists to the island is the famous White Beach. The sand quality is comparable to the finest beach destinations in the world with the shoreline wide enough to explore and let the imagination take over. Rocky outcrops line parts of the shoreline that would be ideal for the more adventurous tourists. The island is ideal for beachcombing and summer leisure, and with the planned developments in the province, it could only get better.
