SIARGAO ISLAND

If water sports are your thing, then the place to be is in Siargao.  A tear-drop shaped island 800 kilometers southeast of Manila.  The island has been heralded as having the best surfing break in the nation, competing with the most beautiful among the world.

Evidenced by a host of local and international surfers flocking to the island, Siargao has been regarded one of the top surfing waves in the world.  Nicknamed “Cloud Nine,” this reef wave is the site of the annual Siargao Cup – a domestic and international competition sponsored by the provincial government of Surigao del Norte.

The surf in the island has been featured in a number of surfing magazines around the globe, including the US based SURFER magazine in 1993.  This provided the impetus of the influx of tourists in the area.  There are also a number of breaks lining the coast, but one inevitably turns to Cloud Nine to ride the “perfect wave.”  This is Siargao.  It is the surfing capital of the Philippines.
