Mt. Guiting-Guiting was first “conquered” by mountaineers, and that day was celebrated well in the town of Magdiwang. At the local library can be found scrapbooks of mountaineers who have scaled the summit. The best time to climb the mountain is during the last days of summer, for this is the safest. Rainy days are definitely not a good time to attempt a trek, as the rocky paths may be too slippery and invite danger.
One can arrive at Magdiwang via ferry from Lucena or Batangas to the port in Sibuyan. The trip from Batangas takes around 18 hours, while the one from Lucena takes only around 14. From the Magdiwang Port, one can take a tricycle to Barangay Tampayan where they can find a guide for the climb up Mt. Guiting-Guiting.
Besides mountain climbing, other activities await visitors of Sibuyan Island. Pure beaches are ideal for snorkling and swimming. One can also visit the island's numerous waterfalls, which include Cawa-Cawa Falls, Lagting Falls, Cataja Falls, and Lambingan Falls.
Sibuyan is blessed with nature's bounty and its people has taken steps to preserve its natural diversity. In a single hectare of forest, 123 different species of trees have been identified, of which 54 are found nowhere else in the world, while in the skies can be seen 131 species of birds and 10 species of fruit bats. The island's waters are also rich in coral reefs and fresh fish.
Visiting Sibuyan may not seem like your typical fuss-free holiday, but it certainly takes you a leap closer to nature!
