Makati is one of the busiest cities in the country where urban living and riches are attached to its name. Lively and up-to-date are the best descriptions you can illustrate in this model city. It was also the country’s financial center, acquiring the name “Wall Street of the Philippines”.  The major banks, corporations, shopping centers and embassies of different nation are stationed here.

Surrounded on the northern and eastern borders is the majestic Pasig River that divides the nearby city of Pasig, Mandaluyong and Pateros. During the Pre-Spanish era, Makati was under the rule of Lakan Tagkan and wife Bouan.  Then, the land was only covered in swamps and cogon grasses overseeing the coasts of Pasig River. The first founder and Governor-General that was stationed in the city was Don Miguel de Legazpi. He was also the first one who spotted the area when the Spaniards came. It was first named San Pedro de Makati in honor of its patron saint. By Philippine Legislature Act No. 2390 it was changed to Makati. 

In this city, you can find the best departments stores, fashion boutiques, exclusive shops, antique stores, shoe stores, name it…they have it! Big and glamorous five-star hotels and restaurants surround the vicinity, making it one of the best nightspots. 

Makati is also famous for several landmarks like Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, the biggest American cemetery outside of USA. The Libingan ng mga Bayani, which serves as a burial ground for our heroes killed during the war. The Sanctuario de Guadalupe, one of cities oldest historical landmark. The ever-famous Ayala Center is where the country’s busiest business and financial center located along Ayala Avenue. 

There are also several beautiful places that you can see in Makati - The Ayala Museum, a remarkable place that showcases the Philippine history and culture. The Philippine Army Museum where antique guns and artillery used during the World War are stored and preserved. The Thomas Jefferson Cultural Center, built in 1945 where complete information of the United States are stored. It also serves as a lecture and seminar hall for various occasions.
