The
coastal town of Navotas was
located in the northwest town of
Manila with the town of Obando,
Bulacan situated in the north;
on the eastern side flows
several rivers like the
Binuangan, Daang Cawayan,
Dampalit and the Malabon Channel
and in the west sway the coast
of Manila Bay.
There
are many legends that surround
the history of Navotas. One,
which says that a long and
narrow delta ranging from north
and south of Tondo, was
swallowed by the sea until an
opening was made. The gap was
developed into a waterway and
was named Navotas River. The
rupture that prompted by the
geographical change was then
referred to by the townspeople
as “nabutas” thus the
name Navotas emerged. Other
story tells that it was a name
given after the towns’ patron
saint, San Jose de Navotas.

Due
to its location, the city became
the leading fish center in the
country and one of the largest
in Asia. They also have the
first major fishing port and
fish market complex under the
management of PFDA (Philippine
Fisheries Development
Authority). This complex
supplies fish in main markets
around Metro Manila.
The
city of Navotas also has
colorful and wonderful cultures
and traditions. Being a fishing
village, the Linggo ng
Mangingisda was celebrated every
2nd week of March
where different activities
connected to fishing are
performed. Another tourist
attraction is the observance of
Navotas Day. It’s a weeklong
event headed by the local
government and one of its
highlights is the contest for
Miss Navotas.
