The
province of Sulu consists of
several islands roving the area
between Basilan and Tawi-Tawi in
southern Mindanao and assembled
into four major insular groups:
Jolo, Panguturan, Samales and
Tapul.
Bounded on the north and
west by Sulu Sea,
on the east by Mindanao
Sea and on the south lies the
Celebes Sea.

The
island terrene of Jolo is mostly
mountainous due to its volcanic
origin.
While the Siasi island
has a hilly interior and the
remaining part are composed of
coral and reef formations with
low-forested and swampy areas.
Sulu
originated its name from the
word "sug", meaning
"water current". Even
before the arrival of the
Spanish colonizers, the island
of Sulu already embraced Islam
introduced to them by Tuan
Masha'ika in 1280 and due to
their location the people were
involved trading with China and
other Asian countries.
Tausug
tribes reign most part of the
Sulu archipelago and was often
referred to as "people of
the current" because of
their close ties to the sea.
They are known for their
bravery, independence and love
for adventure.
Aside from these
qualities, they are also keen
traders, excellent sailors and
fighters.
Agricultural
activities dominate most of the
islands industry due to its rich
soil and ideal climate.
Their main crops include
abaca, coconuts, oranges,
lanzones and exotic fruits like
durian and mangosteen.
Fishing is the most
important industry in the
province since Sulu Sea is one
of the richest fishing grounds
in the country.
The
island's rich historical past
still lingered throughout Sulu.
At the town entrance are
four gates used as watchtowers
during the Spanish era. The
building that were tapered by
fire or cribbled by bullets
during the 70's still stand.
Other places to see in
Jolo are the Sulu Ethnological
Museum at Notre Dame College. The site of the revered tomb of Muslim missionary from abroad
and the Bud Dato, which is
200-meter high hill outside Jolo.
They
also have fine white sand
beaches like Maubo Beach in
Patikul (Jolo's next town). Sulu
province is also known for its
excellent diving spots, the best
among them is the Tubbataha
Reef.
PAL
services a daily flight from
Manila to Zamboanga City to Jolo.
Its airport is 500 meters
away from the town proper.
And boats coming from
Zamboanga City sails to Jolo
daily.

HISTORICAL SITES
|
|
Walled City
The
smallest walled city in the world. This is
where the historic brick walls of Jolo, that
crumbled due to age, neglect and decay, is
located. This is the evidence of Jolo´s
historic and continuous strife. At the
entrance of the city are four gates, which
were used as watch towers and several
mounds, which were burial grounds of Spanish
and American soldiers who died in the hands
of the Muslim warriors.
Provincial Capitol
Constructed
during the administration of Governor Murphy
Sangkula. This is also considered as one of
Jolo´s tourist attractions because of its
moorish-inspired architectural design.
American
Calvary Monument
So
far the only existing museum in Sulu.
Located in Jolo and known as the Sunken
Garden. This was built to thank the American
soldiers who fought for the people from Jolo.
Also serves as the town's landmark.

Maubo Beach
It
boasts of about 1 km of white sand, which is
frequently visited by the residents because
of its accessibility.
Tandu Beach
A
white sand beach found
just 2 kms. away from the town proper.
Tadjung Beach
Another
white sand beach just 3 kms. away from the
town proper.
Pearl Farm at
Marungas Island
The
Sulu Sea is dotted with coral reefs and can
provide probably some of the world’s best
dive spots for those seeking the ultimate in
underwater beauty and adventure.
Tubbataja Reef is the best-known site
in the Sulu Sea, drawing divers from all
over the world.
