The island terrene of Jolo is mostly mountainous due to its volcanic origin.  While the Siasi island has a hilly interior and the remaining part are composed of coral and reef formations with low-forested and swampy areas.

Sulu originated its name from the word "sug", meaning "water current". Even before the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, the island of Sulu already embraced Islam introduced to them by Tuan Masha'ika in 1280 and due to their location the people were involved trading with China and other Asian countries.

The island's rich historical past still lingered throughout Sulu.  At the town entrance are four gates used as watchtowers during the Spanish era. The building that were tapered by fire or cribbled by bullets during the 70's still stand.  Other places to see in Jolo are the Sulu Ethnological Museum at Notre Dame College.  The site of the revered tomb of Muslim missionary from abroad and the Bud Dato, which is 200-meter high hill outside Jolo.

They also have fine white sand beaches like Maubo Beach in Patikul (Jolo's next town). Sulu province is also known for its excellent diving spots, the best among them is the Tubbataha Reef.
