This city
known is to be the Land of Peace
and the capital of Surigao del
Norte. Surigao city is a part of
the province located in the
northeastern Mindanao area. The
place is also blessed with
wonderful natural resources and
picturesque spots like beaches,
mangrove forest, caves, lagoons,
waterfalls and many more. Its
socio-political solidity is one
of the province’s unsurpassed
and unsullied qualities.
Found
on the northern point of
Mindanao, Surigao City makes a
perfect destination for tourists
and travelers as well as a nice
site for booming businesses. It
is composed of 54 barangays, 21
are islands and 33 are found in
the mainland. Some of the main
dialects in the city are
Surigaonon, Cebuano, Boholano,

Surigao’s
history was dated as early as
1738, according to the records
of Fray San Francisco de San
Antonio, and was first
recognized as Banahao. Surigao
City was situated at the tip of
Mindanao Island where ships
called “Bilan-Bilan” was
ported. It was also said that
Surigao was the biggest province
in Mindanao, which includes
territories from several parts
of Davao Oriental, Agusan del
Sur, Agusan del Norte, Surigao
del Sur, Surigao del Norte and
Misamis Oriental. In the
city’s famous canal many
historical events took place.
The voyage of Ferdinand Magellan
around the world sailed the
Philippine archipelago using
this passage in 1521. Also the
battle between the US troops and
the Japanese force fought in
this valley of water during
World War II and was branded to
be as the “Battle of Surigao
Strait”. On August 31, 1970
the city became part and main
capital of Surigao del Norte.
Surigao
City is famous for its natural
and aquatic resources. They are
also one of the biggest dealers
of fish and aquamarine goods in
Caraga Region and one of the
main suppliers for Regions 10
and 11. Mineral deposits are
abundant in this city. Nickels
come in big sizes and the
province has a total of 83% of
nickel deposit in the country.
Surigao also serves as the main
passage for both land and sea
transfer from other regions like
NCR, Bicol, Eastern Visayas and
the rest of Mindanao.
There are
many things that you can do and
see in Surigao. You can cave-hop
to the province’s famous
caves: the Buenavista cave and
Silop Multi caves. You can also
enjoy the feel of the sand and
sun in their beautiful beaches
at Sagisi and Sibale Beach. Roam
around the city’s imitation of
Venice, their Day-asan Floating
Villages where a distinctive
site of houses raised on wooden
stilts and bedded rocks and the
villagers traveling by
paddleboats was a sight to
behold.
