Located at the northeastern tip of Mindanao.  Surigao City is best known as an embarkation point for island hopping adventures.  Enclosed by the Gulf of Leyte on the north, Pacific Ocean on the east, Surigao Strait on the west and the provinces of Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte on the south. 

Surrounded by hundred offshore islands, Dinagat being the largest, same with Siargao and Bucas Grande.  The mainland part being hilly and irregular that rise up to 1000 meters.  Located at the tip of the Philippines’ fault, making it inbred to earthquakes.  

The province was called "Caraga" during the Spanish era.  It was referred to the Calagans, asserted to be of the Visayan origin.  During the expedition of Spanish explorer Ruy Lopez de Villalobos, he named the island after Emperor Charles V, King of Spain and called it Cesarea Karoli.

A mixture of Malay with Chinese, Japanese, and Arab, composed the Surigaonons.  Characterized by peace-loving, gentle and non-temperamental people combined with the humorous nature of the Visayans and the thriftiness of the Ilocanos. 

The province boasts of its rich fertile lands ideal for agricultural use.  Their main crops are abaca, coconut, rice and corn.  Mining is also one of their main industries.  The largest nickel deposit in the country and the site of a huge mining and processing complex is found in the island of Noc.  Deposits of gold, chromite, iron, copper, coal and limestone can also be found in this province.  Logging and fishing are their other industries. 

During the month of September, the Maradjao Karadjao Festival is celebrated in honor of the San Nicholas de Tolentino.  Various presentations of Bonok-bonok, a dance performed as a thanksgiving ritual, are seen during the fest. 

One of the best attractions is found the island.  The interior of the Buenavista Cave has been compared with a King's Court, complete with chambers and frozen stalactite and stalagmite figures.  Losondra islet is a unique, natural rock formation that was used as a burial ground by the early inhabitants of the surrounding islands. 

The best white sand beach in the area is on Sagisi Island, also an excellent dive site.  Mabua Pebble Beach, features parallel lines of native cottages and is an ideal spot for water sports, such as windsurfing and jet skiing.  Punta Baluarte is a historical landmark, which was used as an observatory point by Spanish Friars and Japanese occupation forces. 

The island can be accessed by plane thru PAL by Manila to Cebu to Surigao City route.  You can also take flights from Manila to Butuan and from there, take public transportation to Surigao City.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS

Ipil Beach Resorts – A resort with white pebble beach of clear seawater, alongside, heavy-laden coconut trees.  Ipil Beach Recreation Center is equipped with bathroom dressing room facilities and renovation center suited for small beach parties. 

Danawan Beach - Is an island resort in Danawan Island, just across Hikdop Island going west. Its white beach is so rich in rare seashells. Shell aficionados often go there to collect rarities.  

Sabang Beach Resort - It is a kilometer long sprawling black sand beach that has shallow waters up to 400 meters from the shore. This is partially developed and along the seaside portion of PCUM Subdivision in the city proper. 

Mabua Beach Resort - This beach forms an arc that extends to a length of about three kilometers to Ipil Beach. Aside from fine white pebbles as its dominant feature, it has also rock formations, which serve as natural diving boards for swimmers.  

Panomboyom Beach - A part of Barangay Baybay, which is located at the southern tip of HIkdop Island. It is known for its fine white beaches grossly dominated by fine coral rocks, which has been splashed by the waves to the shore. 

General Luna Beach - A discovery of foreign surfers and scuba divers. White sand beaches line the shores for miles and miles facing a handful of islets some hundred meters away from the unrushing waves of the Pacific. 

Mapawa Cave - Located at Barangay Mapawa. It is approximately 15 kilometers away from the city proper. It has cathedral-shaped inner domes richly decorated with magnificent stalactites having like natural chandeliers balanced by an enthralling sight of varied sized stalagmites. 

Buenavista Cave - Located near Sitio Pagkawasan of Barangay Buenavista. It can be reached by water transportation and is approximately four miles from the city proper. It has three entrances which all lead to a cavern approximately 3 km. away. Unique stone formations inside the cave create an illusionary vision of a majestic "King´s Court" complete with other chambers. 

Punta Kalabera, Catadman - Located at the northeastern portion of Hikdop Island. It is a beautiful naturally sculptured skull stone formation which local folks call Punta K Labera. Near or at a distance it looks like a skull of a man. This has been formed as a result of the continuous lashing and splashing of the waves. 

Basul Island - Located northwest of the city, it is noted for its enticing white beaches richly interpolated by empty shells casing and fine corals.  

Raza Island - Even without developing the area, it is already in itself an attraction in this island, one can witness the fascinating and simultaneous interplay of both high and low tides; low tide on one side of the island and high tide on the other.
