One of the last remaining frontier province of the Philippines and has been described as an "Adventurer's Shangri-La by the Pacific" located in the northeastern part of Mindanao.  Surigao del Sur bounded by Surgao del Norte on the North, Philippine Sea on the east, Davao Oriental on the south and Agusan del Sur and Norte on the west.

Mamanwas, Manobos and Tagabaloyes were the province’s first inhabitants.  It is believed that migrants came from the Visayas fled to the province in search for gold. The Spaniards first established their deposition in the town of Tandang and later, the town of Bislig became the center of the Recollect Fathers.
