Rolly has been a mechanic for 25 years. Although he only finished 3rd year of secondary school, he loves to tinker with engines and cars in general. As a testament to his avocation, he opened up a “talyer” near his home. But due to the high rentals for the space, he was forced to shut it down. He did a tour in Saudi Arabia and was a chief mechanic in the country.
After he came back home, he continued to do his work servicing mostly public utility jeepneys but also do cars, trucks and myriad other types of machines. He charges variedly, depending on the type of job but usually charges 400 pesos per work done on a car, like changing wheel caps and such. “Ang pinakamalkai ay sa overhaul, kumikita ako ng Php 5,000 don.” Although he doesn’t have his “talyer” now, he said he prefers “home service” since it would be easier for the client and “wala pang upa sa espasyo.”
