The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) gave 10 Overseas Filipino (OF) families something to be proud of last August 8, at the Club 1851, 20/F BPI Head Office; the revered banking institution gave out the awards for the 10 Outstanding Children of OFs for 2008. Cited and applauded were the children of Overseas Filipinos who have excelled in academics and other areas of talent, skill or social contribution. At the heart of the awards is the affirmation that a good education is the greatest gift that an OF can give his or her children, who, along with the rest of their families, are actually the reason and motivation for their working overseas.

The 10 Outstanding Children of Overseas Filipinos for 2008 are: Ma. Lesley F. Pascual, from the Dela Salle Health Science Institute; Lawrence Ross Jim P. Yap; from Far Easter University; Rachelle C. Araja, from the University of the Philippines, Diliman; Pearl Ivory Q. Laude, from the University of the Philippines, Visayas; Steffi Christel C. Sepe, from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan; Ryan M. Paren, from the University of the Philippines, Visayas; Alexis Ian P. dela Cruz, from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, May Kay Camille P. Andal, from Dela Salle University, Lipa; Maydenn Praise W. Manuel, from the University of Cordillera; and Alexis M. Martinez, from the University of the PhiLippines, Diliman.

Each of the 10 Outstanding Children of Overseas Filipinos received a trophy along with a P50,000 cash prize. The distinguished panel of judges for this year’s awards was taken from BPI’s institutional partners. They were: Director Jocelyn Hapal of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Director Alejandro Padaen of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Director Fe dela Cruz of the Bangko Central ng Pilipinas, Ms. Paz Naypes of the Department of Education, child and parenting expert Louren Dacanay, BPI Vice President and Head of Overseas Customer Segment Jose Raul Jereza, with BPI Senior Vice President Raul Dimayuga serving as the panel’s chairman.

The awards for the 10 Outstanding Children of Overseas Filipinos are part of BPI’s ongoing initiative to give recognition to the great service and enormous sacrifices that OFs make. It is just one among the initiatives of BPI specially geared toward the well being and recognition of the OF community. Along with the BPInoy Life Series and the BPInoy Family Discovery Series, which also address other areas of concern of the OFs besides simple financial matters, the awards for the 10 Outstanding Children of Overseas Filipinos just goes to show that BPI has been walking the extra mile to give Filipinos in other lands the care and satisfaction they truly deserve.
