The New 7 Wonders of Nature is a campaign organized by the non-profit New7Wonders Foundation. According to founder and president Bernard Weber, "So many breathtakingly beautiful, natural places are still quite unknown to many. From waterfalls to fjords, rainforests to mountain peaks, freshwater lakes to salt flats, we are discovering together the incredible beauty and variety of our planet."

The first phase ran through to December 31, 2008, while voting for the second phase will continue through July 7, 2009. Following this, the top 77 nominees (top 11 for each category) will be considered by the New 7 Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor. After reviewing the top 77, the Panel will select the 21 Official Finalists, which will be uncovered on July 21, 2009. These Finalists will then enter the third and final phase of voting to choose the Official New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The Philippines is proud to have as nominees in the first phase our very own Tubbataha Reefs Natural Marine Park, Mayon Volcano and Chocolate Hills. The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Marine Park is made up of two atolls located in the middle of the Sulu Sea. Lying on the Cagayan Ridge, it is a reef ecosystem that serves as a sanctuary for marine life. The Mayon Volcano is the country's most active volcano which located in the province of Albay. Rising 2,462m above the Gulf of Albay, it has an almost perfectly-shaped cone and is considered to be the world's most perfectly formed volcano. Located in Bohol, the Chocolate Hills consists of 1,268 cone-shaped hills of roughly the same size. Spread over an area of over 50 square kilometers, it has been declared the country's 3rd National Geological Monument.

In the second phase that is currently running, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in Palawan is nominated under the Forests, National Parks, Nature Reserves category. The 8.2 km underground river is reputed to be the world's longest, and a distinguishing feature is that it winds through a cave before flowing into the South China Sea.
